It’s official; 99-year rights to the land in Mkuranga

It took a while, but the land in Mkuranga now officially belongs to Malaika Kids for the next 99 years. In Tanzania all land belongs to the government. Companies, organizations and individuals can buy the right to use the land. This is similar to the lease system in the UK. Acquiring rights is a long and difficult process because various local and national levels of government are involved. You may have read about this in our newsletters – we informed you, for example, about compensation of those who were living on the land. The people may have not had permission to live there, but the Tanzanian legal system still offers them protection. As some people had to relocate and others lost their livelihood, we had to pay them compensation.
Once that had been done, we could take the next step. We were keen to get going, and the compensation of farmers convinced local civil servants that we meant business. They therefore agreed that we could begin clearing vegetation from the site required for the actual building of the village.

We now have the so-called Certificate of Occupancy and can go on to the next step; applying for building permits. Fortunately this shouldn’t take long as only local government is involved.
