The first well has been drilled

As preparations began for building the Malaika Kids children’s village in Mkuranga, it was time to drill the first well. Not only is it necessary to have water for the children when they live here, but without water it’s not possible to build. Surveying was of course the first step – and to access a good source, we needed to go down 80 meters deep.

On the basis of these measurements local companies were asked to quote, but Malaika Kids stated one special condition: the companies were expected to contribute to the project. Because if Malaika Kids is trying to help orphans in the area, it’s reasonable to expect local companies to show their involvement. The reactions were indeed positive, and Al-Wattan Drilling Company Ltd, which was awarded the contract, happily donated the much needed ground water pump worth 1500 dollars.

Local women hired in to fetch water necessary for drilling.

The drilling could begin, but first a problem had to be solved: in order to drill water is necessary, but for water you had to drill for it….... 15 local women provided the solution. They were hired to fetch the water by bucket to the drilling location. The first well was therefore a product of local cooperation, and a good example of the way in which the Malaika Kids children’s village will integrate with the local community.
