Malaika Kids awarded the Uhuru Torch
| Malaika Kids new community Village in Mkuranga was honoured with the arrival of the Uhuru Torch on June 6th. Awarded to the most outstanding new social initiatives, it naturally drew a lot of attention to our project from Tanzanian politicians and dignitaries. The procession of the Uhuru flame symbolises freedom and light, and ensures that Tanzanians, particularly politicians and other prominent people are made aware of important initiatives to improve the country’s quality of life. | ||
| Three years ago the Malaika children’s home in Dar es Salaam was honoured with the Uhuru torch; this year the torch went to the children’s village we are building in Mkuranga. This is currently in development, and will offer a home to 320 orphans and the family mothers looking after them. During the ceremony to honour this project, tours of the building site were given and a number of those present gave speeches. Presents including rice and other foods were also offered to Malaika Kids. | ||

| Every year on Independence Day, the most prestigious projects in various districts of Tanzania are honoured with the arrival of the Uhuru Torch. It was lit on 9 December 1961 on the top of Mount Kilimanjaro to celebrate the independence of Tanganyika. (Tanganyika and Zanzibar now form the Federation of Tanzania). | ||
| Each year the Uhuru Torch race starts from different places, honoured by the ceremony and the publicity. The citation is ‘to shine in the country and across the borders, to bring hope where there is despair, love where there is enmity and respect where there is hatred’. The motto of the United Republic is ‘Uhuru na Umoja’: Kiswahili for ‘Freedom and Unity’. | ||
