- It is with great pleasure that I formally accept your invitation to be patron of Malaika Kids. This acceptance is a recognition by myself and the High Commission of Tanzania of the noble work Malaika Kids is doing for the under privileged children in Tanzania.
Supporters climb the Kilimanjaro
| Supporters Mike Grieveson and Paul Nicholson have just returned from their successful ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Kilimanjaro is the highest free standing mountain in the world at 19340 feet, and the top of the mountain is in permanent ice and snow, despite being almost plumb on the equator. They wrote to say "The six day trek covered 70 km and involved traversing a number of climatic zones from tropical rainforest through to Alpine desert. This meant that a wide range of clothing was required to cope with the changing temperature and humidity conditions. The night climb was especially difficult as the steep scree slope led to a boulder scramble many of which at the top were covered in ice. At heights up to 18,500 feet, breathing becomes increasingly difficult and recovery time takes longer than at a lower level. The reward was to see a red African dawn breaking that shed its light over the mountain. Overall it was an unforgettable but exhausting experience that challenged us both to the limit, both mentally and physically. We were glad to be part of a team whose encouragement and support during good times and periods of adversity will never be forgotten." Time did not allow for a trip down to Dar es Salaam during their expedition, but they hope to visit Malaika Kids one day and will be continuing to support and raise money here. |
