- It is with great pleasure that I formally accept your invitation to be patron of Malaika Kids. This acceptance is a recognition by myself and the High Commission of Tanzania of the noble work Malaika Kids is doing for the under privileged children in Tanzania.
Richard Fawkes finished the Inferno Triathlon for Malaika Kids
| Richard Fawkes has just returned from Switzerland after competing in the Inferno Triathlon on 22 Augustus for the "Malaika Kids Tri Team". This super-ironman type race attracts entrants from around the world. | ||
| Started by a rocket burst at dawn on the shore of Lake Thun, over 500 competitors swum into choppy water and a fresh wind to reach the far shore 3.2km away. The technical timing system promptly sent a message to the mobiles of the Malaika Kids Tri Team Supporters Club recording him in 34th place in the open men's category. We were delighted. | ||
| Next, the road bike section took them high into the mountains and into thickening cloud and rain, making the fast, winding descents particularly dangerous. 97km later he was lying 23rd as they switched to mountain bikes in Grindelwald to climb 30km to 2061m Kleine Scheidegg by the mountain trails and then descend into the Lauterbrunnen valley. | ||
| With the rain easing, but cloud still shrouding the mountains, the final leg was the 25km uphill run gaining over 2,200m to finally end on the helicopter pad on top of Piz Gloria, the James Bond mountain from "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" at 10,000ft. | ||
| His final position was an amazing 14th in 10 hours 21 minutes (The winner was multi world champion Marc Pschebizin). | ||
