Mariam Daniel, 12 years old

Mariam was born in Moshi (near Arusha). From an early age Mariam and her sister lived with their grandmother. Her mother worked in town. She never knew her father. Mariam's grandmother was a retired doctor with no income. As there was no money for school, Mariam and her sister were taught at home by her grandmother. At some point Mariam's mother collected the children. As her mother was homeless, they lived on the streets, occasionally staying with family or friends. Then Mariam's sister died. One day her mother simply did not show up. Mariam could no longer stay with the friends she was staying with. She was taken to the police and placed with Malaika Kids via the Welfare Office. Mariam is already a young lady. She speaks quite a bit of English and dances really well; She definitely has a feeling for rhythm!
