Founder's Message
| November 2003 As far back as I can remember, in Dar-es-Salaam, I had ‘brothers’ and ‘sisters’ with whom I played, bathed and went to school. These were children my mother took in from the street because they had nobody to care for them. Then I spent many years in the Netherlands. In 1998 I was back home visiting my mother in Tanzania together with my Dutch husband. The house was once again full of children, taken from the street. The impression made on us was unforgettable. The decision to help was quickly made. In the past 5 years AIDS has spread rapidly in Tanzania. With the loss of my uncle and two aunts, my family has also suffered. The most tragic consequence of the AIDS epidemic is surely the enormous increase in the number of street children. When we were back in Tanzania 2003, we saw children everywhere; begging for a shilling (1 eurocent), eating from rubbish bins and sleeping on the streets. Because my mother also had to take in to her house the two children of her dead sisters, there is no room in her house for more children. Together with some other women, she hands out food on the street and brings the children needing medical care to hospital. We want to help her; we want to offer the homeless children of Tanzania a humane existence. Our objective is, together with you, to set up and run a children’s village. Malaika Kids must bridge that gap between our dream and a new reality in Tanzania. My mother, Najma Manji could wait no longer; she has already started with the first project. Malaika Kids is currently helping her with the rent and running costs of a house in Dar-es-Salaam. Here we can at least offer a better future to 10 to 15 children. We need to do far more and are asking for your help. Your donations are essential to enable our dream to come true. Let’s (you and I) help the homeless orphans of Tanzania; don’t leave them to fend alone. Jamilla Founder Malaika Kids Network |
