Malaika Children’s home Dar es Salaam

On 16 February 2004, we acquired a house in Dar es Salaam and fitted it out to receive 18 children. This was the beginning of Malaika Kids as an independent charity.
The house was rebuilt to make sure there were enough toilets and showers and provide a suitable kitchen. In total there was room for 18 children. Since May 2004 all the beds have been full.
Two female workers were taken on to keep the children’s home going on a daily basis. In addition we had to take on two security guards to protect the children 24 hours a day. There are still people who believe that sex with a virgin will cure them of Aids; hence the need for protection (this fable was begun by a South African DJ and has since spread through the whole of Africa with dire consequences).
All children taken into care go to school. The future of these children is guaranteed over the next 5 years by donors in the Netherlands, who have signed long term covenants.
